Who Done It? Self Esteem Mystery Notes
by Susan Chambers, Arizona USA
We have developed a fun, self esteem boosting family get together we call "Something About You" or "Mystery Notes", which we do fairly regularly as a family, particularly whenever some family member seems to need a little extra self esteem boost in their life. We've also done it at birthday parties and bigger family/friend events and it is always a hit.
The idea came to me one night after my husband and I had watched the movie, "Something About Mary" and we were discussing the all the things we can like about someone but let years go by never quite articulating those things in a way that the person really "got".
Mystery Notes goes like this -- With everyone gathered together, (no TV or interruptions allowed) each participant gets a blank sheet of paper taped securely onto their back. Then with easy-to-read markers (that we switch to add to the mystery) we go from person to person and each anonomous "mystery person" writes something that we like about that person on their back. Later, that person reads it and guesses who wrote it, then that person must expound fully on what they wrote.
Sounds simple but the actual experience is deeply profound. Sometimes we'll vary it, "Something About You I Appreciate", or "Something Unique About You I Admire. You get the idea.
Right from the beginning as small preschoolers our kids saved their papers - even pasting them in scrapbooks. I often imagine quoting some of those heartwarming mystery notes in my proud-parent speech on their wedding day!
