Work From Home While Raising Well Adjusted Kids

A surpringly high number of people work from home. According to the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, of the 136,602,000 workers over the age of 16 in the United States in 2004, a whopping 15.1% of them, or 20,673,000, people worked at home. Other business surveys put that number much higher, as much as 30% and rapidly growing.

Money Magazine reports that 20% of work from home businesses gross between 100k and 500k per year. Additionally, 70% of work at home business ventures last longer than three years compared to 29% of the other business start ups, according to The Home Based Business Institute. Home based business are succeeding by every indicator and their growth is accelerating.

The number one deciding factor leading people to work from home -- at a resounding 72.7 percent -- is to spend more time with family and to make a priority of child raising. Home based business owner surveys consistently report that PARENTS FEEL THEIR CHILDREN ARE MORE WELL RAISED AND GENERALLY BETTER DEVELOPED WHEN AT LEAST ONE PARENT WORKS FROM HOME.

Second in importance (56 percent) was solving daycare problems. Other top reasons for working from home include better quality of life, being able to be your own boss, more personal and professional freedom, more control over your time.

When analyzing the numbers of people who own their own home based business, the less educated Americans jumped into their rightful ranks of the self-employed from home: Less than high school diploma, 58.9.0%, High school but no college, 54.0%, Some college or associate degree, 46.7%, and Bachelor’s degree or higher, 24.1%. Of those, 37.6% are men and 29.4% are women. However Moms leap ahead when they've got young children at home.

Moms with kids under the age of 6 represent the smallest demographic group of the total number of employed people in the U.S., but they also command the largest percentage of income earning home-based workers. Of the total 9,331,000 of working moms with kids under the age of 6, 377,676 get paid to work at home and 526,164 have their own home based business. Almost 1 out of 10 moms, 903,840 stay at home moms total, with kids under the age of 6 get paid to work at home and in some form or other have their own home business.

And what about Dads? Well, Mr. Mom isn’t far behind his wife. Of the 12,042,000 working dads in our workforce with kids under the age of 6, 313,788 of them get paid to work at home and another 655,380 have their own home based business, for a total of 969,168 stay at home dads, or 8% of the total working population of dads with kids below the age of 6.

Approximately 1 of out every 10 working dads in the U.S. with kids 0-18 years of age work at home or have their own home business. The number is similar for moms. It is not clear how many American households have both a work at home or self-employed at home mom and dad.

COMPARING WORKING AT HOME TO An OUTSIDE THE HOME JOB

As opposed to home-business income, is working out of the home while raising a family really a second income at all asks high profile home entrepreneur Joe Crawford, as he points out the following --

Taxes - for four months and a week, or 3 hours out of every 8-hour day, you're working for Uncle Sam - The average American family of four with a median income of $47,012 will pay $10,250 in federal taxes and another $6,110 in state and local taxes for a total "tax liability" of $16,36. Average childcare costs - $7000 per year.

Doing a quick job related expense tally: gasoline - $1200 per year; dry cleaning, business wardrobe, eating out for lunches $2000; auto insurance - $500; auto maintenance (oil, tires)and parking $1800. Expenses that are non-existent for home based business owners. And that does not take into account value (or loss) in earning power hours during time spent commuting.

Joe finishes by asking if that second income is really income at all when the advantages and savings of starting a work from home business are so compelling.
